Class Descriptions

All of our Ballet/Tap/Jazz classes for young children ages 9 and under use games and songs as a way of teaching children through creative movement and play to keep children interested while having fun but still learning.

Ballet:

The foundation of most modern day dance forms. This beautiful and demanding technique is a necessity for all young, aspiring dancers. Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology.

Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of the French, Vagonova and Cecchetti methods as students’ progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Pointe:

All pointe classes are designed for students with previous ballet training. Students will utilize previously learned ballet technique while working in pointe shoes. For 2017/2018 year we require this class to be taken twice per week. A student must be enrolled in ballet while taking this class.

Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work and across the floor combinations. These exercises focus on strengthening the feet and ankles. Students begin with pre-pointe when suggested by the teacher and progress when the body is strong enough.  A student must be at least 11 years of age to be considered for pointe, but may start pre-pointe a bit earlier. The student must also have at least 3 years of prior ballet training.

Pre-Pointe is taken with no pointe shoes.

Tap:

Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap.

Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and having fun.

As students’ progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Jazz:

Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolation’s of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns.

Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well-rounded dancer. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolation’s, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations.

As students’ progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

These classes blend elements of Contemporary and Modern dance, such as freedom of expression, interpretation of music, principles of fall and recovery, control, breathing, balance and contraction/release.

This class is offered to Level Two & Three Students who have experience in Ballet & Jazz. A student must be enrolled in either Ballet or Jazz at the time of enrollment in this class.

Acro:

Acro is not the typical tumbling or gymnastics class. Acro is more fluid than gymnastics. Our experienced acro instructor will guide the class towards increased flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline and concentration.

This class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique, teaching such skills as handstands, chin stands, elbow stands, cartwheels, back bends, walkovers, balance and contortion tricks, all each student’s individual level of experience. And it’s fun, too!  All students enrolled in acro must be enrolled in ballet or Jazz while taking this class.

Hip Hop:

Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking.

Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves.

Therefore class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.

Strength & Conditioning:

Students will gain endurance and strength through a series of exercises designed with the needs of dancers in mind. This class is offered for Level 1,2, and 3 students only.
